Medical
The next Medical Panel is due to take place on the 12th August 2026.
Applicants who wish to apply for medical priority must complete either a Medical Needs Assessment Form (for physical medical needs) or a Mental Health Medical Needs Assessment Form. These forms can be collected from our offices at Queens Buildings, Worksop or 17B The Square, Retford. You can request a form from customer.services@bassetlaw.gov.uk or housing.registration@bassetlaw.gov.uk.
Please note that Medical forms will only be accepted if they are fully completed, signed by the applicant and if the applicant already has a Bassetlaw HomeFinder application.
If you have had medical priority previously but have lost this medical priority for any reason, you will need to provide evidence that your medical circumstances have changed significantly. Repeat medical applications won’t be considered unless there has been a significant change in your medical circumstances.
Medical forms will not be accepted from applicants who do not currently live in Bassetlaw or who do not have a Local Connection to Bassetlaw.
Physical medical needs
If you have a physical medical need to move accommodation you must complete a Medical Needs Assessment Form. The form can be downloaded here: Medical Needs Assessment Form
You must also provide:
- A Patient Summary from their GP surgery which confirms their diagnosed medical conditions and currently prescribed medication
- Occupational Therapy Housing Needs Assessment from Nottinghamshire County Council.
Medical forms will not be considered without both a Patient Summary and an Occupational Therapy Housing Needs Assessment.
An Occupational Therapy Housing Needs Assessment can be arranged by contacting Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 8080. It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange their Housing Needs Assessment; Bassetlaw District Council will not arrange Assessments for applicants.
Mental health medical needs
If you have a mental health medical need to move accommodation you must complete a Mental Health Medical Needs Assessment Form. The form can be downloaded here: Mental Health Medical Needs Assessment Form
You must also provide the following supporting evidence which must be from a medical professional, such as a GP or consultant doctor, which confirms:
- Any diagnosed mental health conditions you have, and
- What impact your current accommodation is having on your mental health, and
- What impact moving into alternate accommodation will have on your mental health.
Medical forms will not be considered without supporting evidence that confirms all of the above information.
Medical Panel
Once all required evidence has been received, medical applications are considered by the Council’s Medical Panel. The Panel consists of a senior officer of Bassetlaw District Council and a qualified medical advisor, typically a GP.
The Panel will assess your medical circumstances and may make one of the following decisions:
- Not to grant any medical priority;
- To grant some medical priority;
- To defer for more information, such as further evidence of health conditions.
The Panel will decide what types of property you are eligible for giving consideration to your medical conditions.
Please note that an additional bedroom will only be granted where there is a clearly evidenced medical need for an additional bedroom.
You will be notified of the outcome of the Medical Panel by letter typically within 3 working days of the Medical Panel.
Banding
The Medical Panel can decide to grant one of the following Bands:
No medical housing need: The applicant doesn’t have any medical need for housing, or the reasons stated by the applicant are the result of social reasons such as anti-social behaviour or overcrowding.
Band C Some Medical Need: The applicant has some medical needs which would be improved by moving to alternate accommodation.
Band B High Medical Need: The applicant has a medical condition which makes it difficult for them to gain access to and use essential facilities within their current home.
Band A Severe Medical Need: The applicant has medical conditions which make it impossible for them to gain access to and use safely the basic facilities in their current home, such as bathing facilities.
Bidding
Applicants who are granted Bands A & B are expected to bid for all available properties in the areas that are set out in the Medical Panel letter. For example, if we state that you must bid for all properties in Worksop and the surrounding areas, we will expect you to bid for every available property that you are eligible for in Worksop, Rhodesia, Shireoaks and Carlton in Lindrick.
You must bid for all available properties whether you believe they are suitable or not.
If you are in next position for a property, we will assess whether the property is suitable for your medical needs. For applicants with physical medical needs, this assessment will include having the property assessed by an Occupational Therapist from Nottinghamshire County Council. If the property is not suitable for you, or can’t be adapted to meet your needs, you will be bypassed for the property.
